Pie and Doughnut Charts

Pie and doughnut charts use segmented circular images, where the size of each segment of the pie or doughnut is proportional to the quantity it represents. Pie and Doughnut charts are most effective when the number of segments are few.  Let us consider for example a data model that contained information regarding all expenses in a business concern.

Consider also that information is available in the same data model regarding type of expense, month of expense, etc. If you wished to generate a pie or doughnut chart to study how much each type of expense contributed to total expense, you would drag the ‘expense’ column name from the Columns List in the Chart Design page to the Y axis field. If you wish to apply computations to the column values in the Y-axis, you may do so in the Chart Design page

And you would drag the ‘Expense Type’ column name to the X axis. In fact, the Chart Design page offers you the additional functionality of adding more than one column to the X axis. This means that you could also drag the ‘Expense Sub Type’ column name to the X axis which would enable you to drill down in the image to various other views. From the initial Expenses pie chart, you will be able to see the Sub types of expense within each expense segment of the pie chart with this feature.

You can include up to six column names to the X axis and define a drill down path across multiple sub sets of data.
